The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) of Dutchess County last week held two training sessions in the use of NARCAN, the medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Ninety-four local residents attended the training, learning the signs of an overdose and how to administer NARCAN. Those who completed the training received a free NARCAN kit. Poughkeepsie…. The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) of Dutchess County will offer “Understanding Radiation,” an educational program, on Thursday, July 27th, at 7 p.m., at the Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response (DER), 392 Creek Road in Poughkeepsie. The training is free and open to the public, but registration prior to the event is required.
“Small amounts of radiation can be found in building materials, the ground, and in products we use each day,” said A. K. Vaidian, MD, MPH, Commissioner of the Dutchess County Department of Behavioral & Community Health. “In reality, people are routinely exposed to trace amounts of radiation, and this training can help clarify what that means regarding our health and safety.”
Led by Dennis Quinn, an MRC member with more than 40 years of experience in the radiation protection industry, the presentation will focus on defining what radiation is, where it can be found, and what health effects, if any, it may cause. Instruments used to detect and measure radiation will be reviewed and demonstrated.
The Medical Reserve Corps of Dutchess County is part of a national network of more than 200,000 volunteers dedicated to supporting public health infrastructure as well as disaster preparedness and response in the community. Both medical professionals and non-medical volunteers are needed.
